Diving the J4 Submarine

In 1919 The Australian Navy got 6 submarines as a gift from the British Government. After a few years they were already decommissioned because of cuts in the defence budget. The Melbourne Salvage Company bought the J1, J2, J4 and the J5 submarines for 10.500 pounds. They wre to be scuttled in Commonwealth Disposal Area No.3 better known as Port Philip Heads "Ship's Graveyard".

These days the shipwreck is a nice dive site for advanced divers although there can be a strong surge in the main part of the body. It is possible to penetrate the submarine through varies hatches. The submarine lies in 27.6 meters of water and was 83.5 meters in length. The bow is detached from the rest of the sub and that probably happened because of the explosions when the sub was scuttled. In the bow you can see four of the six torpedo tubes and also the conning tower is in very good condition.
