Diving the SS Nord

The SS Nord lies upright on a depth of around 35-40 meters on the seafloor. Some of the decking collapsed, but the ship is mainly still intact. It's a popular dive site even though it's a deep dive.

On 7 November 1915, the SS Nord was on its way from Melbourne to Hobart when the captain steered the SS Nord to the Hippolyte Rocks hoping to find some shelter from the heavy seas and storm they were battling against. In the afternoon they hit a rock that didn't appear on any map. Soon the SS Nord began to take water.

The captain tried to get the ship in the sheltered waters of Port Arthur, but due to the heavy weather they weren't making enough progression. Around 7.00 pm the crew was evacuated from the ship and all 42 crew members survived the ordeal. The SS Nord sunk soon after the evacuation.
