Diving the HMAS Brisbane

The HMAS Brisbane was a guided missile destroyer that was built for the Royal Australian Navy in the USA in 1965. When the 134 meter long ship was launched on 5 May 1966 it was christened by the Lord Mayor's wife. It's namesake is the City of Brisbane in Queensland.
The HMAS Brisbane served on several missions during the Vietnam War between 1969 and 1971.
In 1990 the HMAS Brisbane also deployed to the Persian Gulf for Operation Damask. The HMAS Brisbane's primarily role was plane guard for the USS Midway Carrier Task Group.
On 19 October 2001 the HMAS Brisbane was decommisioned by the Royal Australian Navy. The Bridge and one of the 127 mm guns were preserved and are now on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
The HMAS Brisbane was sunk on 31 July 2005 off the coast of Mooloolaba and is lying on a depth of approximately 30 meters. To breach the hull, 38 charges were detonated and the HMAS Brisbane sank in 2.5 minutes.
