Darwin's heritage

On the morning of 19 February 1942 the Japanese launched an air raid on Darwin. Most of the Australian troops were send overseas and only a small group was left behind to defend Australia. Nobody suspected Australia would be attacked on that day. More that 40 ships were in the port of Darwin when Japanese planes attacked Darwin. Many planes and 10 ships were destroyed that day and more than 240 people got killed.
On the evening before Christmas in 1974 cyclone Tracy did a lot of damage to Darwin. As a result of this cyclone lots of boats sank. Many of these ships were salvaged, but some still remain on the bottom of the sea and some are considered to be Darwin's best dive sites.
