Explore Chuuk
Chuuk is part of the Federal States of Micronesia and is better known to divers as Truk.
The state of Chuuk consist of 11 islands that all have huge mangroves. These islands are all located in Chuuk Lagoon and there are 14 atolls that surround the lagoon.
The total landmass of Chuuk is around 128 square kilometers. This includes the outer islands as well. The largest island in the lagoon is Weno and the airport is located on this island.
The main attraction of Chuuk is the huge amount of shipwrecks that can be found in the lagoon. These wrecks are all from WWII.
History
In the early 1940's, Chuuk was used by the Japanese Navy as headquarters for their Imperial Navy's Fourth Fleet. The United States attacked the Japanese Navy in February 1944. This attack was named "Operation Hailstorm" and it took the Japanese totally by surprise. The attack lasted for two days and ended with hundreds of ships, airplanes, guns and tanks wrecked and shattered on the lagoon's floor.
